Anja Meyer is a trained actor and model who has worked in Europe, in Canada for 1 year, and in Australia for 7 years. Her career has taken her now to Singapore, where she is enjoying to explore the opportunity of modeling and acting in Asia. Anja has great style and has learnt a lot from her various roles in the fashion industry.
Hi Anja! Thanks for doing this interview with That Model Magazine. How did you start out in the modeling industry?
It all just started as a hobby more than 10 years ago and the more experienced I got, the more joy it brought me and so I decided to pursue it as a career. My main goal is to pursue acting after attending drama school in 2009.
In the future I would like to expand my experience and exposure as a model to go along with my acting career.
Which country are you based in?
I've lived and worked in several countries in Europe, in Canada for 1 year, in Australia for 7 years. Currently I work in Singapore.
How important is modeling education? Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?
Modeling courses may be useful, but for myself, my experience and learning comes from observing and on-the-job-training. I think it’s due to the fact that I started out just for the fun of it, and for the sake of a hobby. I volunteered at photography workshops. I also switched roles and experienced what it was like to be a photographer and take photos of other models. Once I realized I wanted to take modeling to the next level, I practiced posing and did research via YouTube videos.
What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model? What advice would you give to others who wants to be successful as a model?
I think it takes confidence, discipline and resilience. The high fashion industry has specific industry standards in terms of measurements and often, age. However there are lots of different modeling markets. As an actor it is important to be trained in acting, creative thinking skills and a business mindset. Overall looking after yourself, laughing a lot, and living a healthy lifestyle is recommended.
What are your goals as a model?
I would like to work with more well-known brands and major campaigns. My goals are to work with top talents in their field, such as award-winning photographers and become a top talent in my modeling and acting career.
How do you keep in shape?
I generally eat healthy and nutritiously 80% of the time, but allow myself indulgements. My special treats are gummy bears, chocolate and ice cream.
I love exercising and it is part of my lifestyle since childhood. I used to train martial arts Taekwondo and Capoeira for a few years, at the moment I go to the gym 2-4 times a week. Water sports like snorkeling, diving and swimming have a special place in my life too.
How do you define your boundaries when choosing to accept a modeling request?
While I can appreciate the artistic contribution of nudity in art, I am not accepting any nude or topless projects. Once, I received an offer for a cover photoshoot for the men's magazine Penthouse, but I personally made the choice that only my boyfriend has the right to see all of me.
Tell us what's your memorable experience so far.
My most memorable experience as a model would be the shoot I did for Singapore Airlines. The whole experience of sitting in the prototype of the new airplane was super exciting. The crew was very friendly and the photographer has years of award-winning experience being ranked in the top 200 advertising photographers world wide.
Also, in 2013, I performed at the Playhouse Sydney Opera House. I have always wanted to visit the iconic Sydney Opera House, but could have never imagined that I would be lucky enough to perform on stage just a few years after moving to Sydney.
